The Sora artificial intelligence model for video generation from OpenAI will be launched globally later today.
After a presentation earlier this year, OpenAI's Sora video model is now available to the public.
Sora, the highly anticipated video generation model developed by OpenAI, has been released for public use after an initial demonstration earlier this year. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus or Pro in the United States and most of the other countries where the chatbot is available will be able to start experimenting with this tool beginning today, as announced by the company. This new product is powered by a more powerful model than the one presented previously in February. Sora Turbo is noted for being considerably faster, although OpenAI warns that the new model still has limitations, as it "often generates unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions over extended periods."
Upon entering the dedicated Sora page, users will find a feed of videos generated by the model for others. By clicking on a video, they will be able to view the exact prompt someone used to create the video. From this site, it is also possible to re-edit a video, integrate it into an ongoing clip, or make a remix. In this initial phase, OpenAI has limited Sora to creating videos of up to 1080p and with a maximum duration of 20 seconds. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can generate up to 50 videos at 480p per month, while those who opt for fewer videos can choose to create them at 720p. The Pro plan allows for ten times the usage, with higher resolutions and longer durations. OpenAI plans to offer customized pricing for different types of users, which will be announced early next year.
For security reasons, each video includes a visible watermark by default and contains C2PA metadata to facilitate identification. OpenAI has also stated that it will block Sora users who attempt to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or sexual deepfakes. More generally, the company will limit uploads of content that includes people until it has refined its safeguards against deepfakes.
Even those without a ChatGPT subscription will be able to visit the Sora website to explore what others have created with this tool. During a live broadcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that it might take some time before Sora is available in Europe and the UK.
