8BitDo has unveiled its new Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller, a controller designed to securely attach directly to smartphones and mobile devices through an extendable gripping mechanism. This gamepad is already available for pre-order at a price of $49.99, with a launch scheduled for November 29, 2024.
The Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller is compatible with smartphones and small tablets that measure between 100 mm and 170 mm in length. Unlike other controllers that connect via USB-C, this new model connects wirelessly via Bluetooth, although it is only compatible with Android devices.
The Bluetooth connection requires the controller to have a rechargeable 350 mAh battery, which the company claims provides up to 15 hours of gameplay after a 1.5-hour charge. This battery adds a weight of 236 grams to the controller, making it heavier than some alternatives like the Backbone One, which connects to the device’s charging port and weighs 138 grams.
The controller features joysticks and triggers with Hall effect magnetic sensor technology. Similar to the GameSir G8 Plus controller, this design aims to minimize the "drift" issue, allowing players to avoid unwanted movements or button presses while gaming. Additionally, the controller includes shoulder buttons, a four-directional d-pad with a "clicky" feel, as well as turbo, macro, and profile buttons, and two additional programmable buttons on the back.
A standout feature is its compatibility with 8BitDo's Ultimate software, which allows users to customize and reconfigure the controller. Unlike the company's more affordable models, the Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller offers extensive customization options thanks to the software, which is available as both a desktop and mobile application. Players can remap controls, create macros, and even set up multiple profiles. For those who are fans of first-person shooter games, there is also the option to adjust trigger sensitivity for a more immediate response.
