Instagram is testing a new "community chat" feature similar to Discord.

Instagram is developing a "community chat" feature that will allow users to create groups of up to 250 people within the app.

Instagram is developing a new feature called "community chat," which will allow users to create groups of up to 250 people within the app. This feature, which has not yet been released to the public, was discovered by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, known for identifying new features in Meta’s apps.

According to images shared by Paluzzi, community chats will operate similarly to Discord. Users will be able to form conversations around specific topics and will have control over who can join, although there is a limit of 250 participants per community.

Unlike Instagram's broadcast channels, which allow creators to send messages to their followers, in the community chat, all members will be able to actively participate in the conversation. Additionally, moderation features have been incorporated; administrators will be able to delete messages and members to ensure a safe environment. As reflected in the screenshot, the Instagram team will also monitor these chats in accordance with its Community Guidelines.

At this time, it is unclear when, or if, this feature will be available to all users. A spokesperson for Instagram mentioned that it is an internal prototype not being tested outside the company. However, Meta has introduced similar features in its other apps, such as WhatsApp, which began testing a "Communities" feature in 2022, as well as "Community Chats" on Facebook and Messenger that same year. Mark Zuckerberg indicated that these features are designed to help people find "new ways to connect with those who share their interests."
