In January, United Airlines announced that it will accelerate the implementation of Starlink in its fleet, thus offering an experience similar to being in a lounge, but in the air, according to Vice President of Digital Technology, Grant Milstead. Recent reports indicate a significant improvement in Internet connectivity aboard one of the largest airlines in the world. According to TechRadar, planes equipped with Starlink can provide speeds of up to 250 Mbps, which represents a remarkable advancement compared to current speeds on flights, which are up to 50 times slower. This will allow passengers to enjoy faster access to their streaming platforms, perform quick downloads, and be more productive while working in the air.
Through its collaboration with SpaceX, United intends to install Starlink in its fleet of 1,000 planes before the end of the year. The first of the planes configured with Starlink is already operational, and more are expected to join soon. There are two key aspects of the agreement between United and Starlink that could be appealing to travelers. First, access to Starlink is planned to be offered for free to members of the MileagePlus program, unlike the current service, which is slower and does not offer free access. Joining this program is simple and free, allowing members to earn and redeem miles through the United Airlines website.
Secondly, the installation of the Starlink system appears to be a straightforward process, as it requires few components. This supports United's goal of having Starlink across its entire fleet in a nine-month timeframe. The setup includes a satellite antenna, two wireless access points, a power unit, and a power button in the cabin. Except for the button for the pilot, the installation is comparable to a Starlink system at home. United is expected to start informing which flights will have the Starlink service as passengers purchase tickets.
Numerous airlines worldwide are already integrating Starlink into their planes or planning to do so, including Hawaiian Airlines, Air France, and Qatar Airways, among others.
