I have Philips Hue lights throughout my house and this is what I expect from their AI assistant.
Five brilliant ideas.
At CES 2025, taking place in Las Vegas, the company Signify, responsible for Philips Hue, has revealed that its lighting ecosystem will soon feature a generative artificial intelligence assistant. While details are still limited, it is anticipated that users will be able to control this assistant through written or spoken commands, allowing for the creation of customized lighting scenes based on mood, occasion, or preferred style. Additionally, users will be able to provide feedback to improve the assistant's performance over time.
A specific launch date for the assistant has yet to be announced, but late last month, an editor from a fan site noted that the usual search icon in the Hue app had been replaced by a set of stars, which typically symbolize AI features. This suggests that the launch could happen at any time.
Among the expectations for the new assistant, there are significant desires. First, the implementation without a subscription fee, as Philips Hue products are already considered among the most expensive in the smart lighting market. Adding an extra cost for AI functionalities could deter some potential customers.
Second, it is expected that the assistant won't solely focus on changing light colors. It would be helpful if, upon saying "I'm going on a trip for a week," the assistant could trigger a 'simulate presence' automation, turning lights on and off in different rooms throughout the day to give the impression that someone is home. And of course, a morning routine that gradually increases light intensity to facilitate waking up would be ideal.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that the assistant will be compatible with other devices, not just lights. This would allow for arming or disarming connected security systems, offering additional conveniences to the user. For instance, by saying "I'm going to work," the assistant could activate the security system and turn off all the lights.
Another interesting aspect could be the inclusion of a simple search feature in video logs, enabling users to easily find specific events using natural language commands. This could be a significant addition for those with Philips Hue Secure subscriptions, saving time while searching through recordings.
Finally, having energy-saving suggestions would be beneficial. Based on how users heat and cool their homes, the assistant could provide recommendations to optimize energy use for lights, sensors, and connected devices, perhaps even using the bulbs as presence sensors to determine if a room is occupied.
