YouTube is testing an upgrade to its Premium Lite subscription level. This week, some users shared screenshots on social media, and a Google representative later confirmed to various media outlets that the new version is being tested in Australia, Germany, and Thailand.
This mode would include "limited ads." According to the details, most videos would be ad-free, although ads might appear in music content and Shorts, as well as non-intrusive ads during searches and browsing.
The Premium Lite subscription was initially introduced in Europe in 2021 but was removed in October 2023 after a trial period. The only advantage of this plan was the elimination of all ads, without offering offline viewing or background play options that the regular Premium subscription provides.
In Australia, the price for Premium Lite has been confirmed to be $9 per month, compared to $17 for full access to Premium. This is in line with the original Lite package rate, which was approximately half the cost of a regular plan. Given YouTube's current pricing structure—$14 per month for an individual user or $23 for the family option—the introduction of a mid-tier option could be appealing to many subscribers.
