The remaster of Nightdive's 'The Thing' is now available.
Nightdive Studios unexpectedly released a remastered version of the 2002 video game The Thing. This update of the third-person shooter features 4K graphics and new animations.
Nightdive Studios, known for its remasters of titles like Star Wars: Dark Forces and System Shock 2, has surprised the public by releasing a remaster of the cult classic game from 2002, The Thing. This updated version is now available on various platforms, including PC, Xbox One and Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and via streaming through NVIDIA GeForce Now.
Originally developed by Computer Artworks, The Thing is a third-person shooter that serves as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1984 film of the same name. The plot follows a team of U.S. special forces sent to the Arctic base from the movie to investigate the events that took place there. Beyond its origins, the game is known for its mechanics of trust, fear, and infection, where the player's decisions can influence the trust of the characters in the game, determining whether they believe you are "The Thing" or if they themselves will transform into it.
With this remaster, Nightdive retains the core mechanics of the original game but enhances the graphics and engine to function on modern consoles. It is now possible to play in 4K and up to 120 fps, with "improved character models, textures, and animations," as announced by the studio, in addition to "advanced 3D rendering for updated lighting and atmospheric effects." The remaster also features trophies and achievements on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, for those seeking to complete these challenges.
The remaster of The Thing was originally announced in June 2024 during the IGN Live event, as part of a series of remastering projects that Nightdive has been undertaking in recent years. Founded in 2012, the studio started with the task of making System Shock 2 playable on modern PCs and has worked on other titles such as the Turok games and Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition.
The remastered version of The Thing is available digitally for $29.99 on Steam (where it is verified for Steam Deck), GOG, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo eShop.
