The new GOG preservation program aims to keep classic games playable 'forever'

"Video games must remain accessible, playable, and in constant evolution."

The PC gaming platform GOG has launched a preservation program focused on maintaining the playability of classic video games, ensuring their functionality "now and in the future." According to a post on their blog, if a game is part of this Preservation Program, it means the company will be investing its resources to ensure its compatibility with current and future systems.

The program launches with a total of 100 titles, including classics like Diablo, System Shock 2, and Resident Evil 1-3. GOG plans to add even more games in the coming months. The games included in this program offer several benefits. By purchasing a title from the program, users can expect:

  • The game to function on the most common current and future PC configurations.
  • Assurance that this version is the best and most complete available, with compatibility, manuals, and additional content, as well as DLCs and features that may not be available in other editions.
  • Access to GOG's technical support in case of technical issues while running the game.
  • Continued access to offline installers, allowing users to manage their titles as they wish.

GOG also expressed its intent to acquire "all games that are no longer updated or maintained by their original publishers," regardless of their age. A recent study by the Video Game History Foundation revealed that 87% of games released before 2010 can no longer be played. This situation is exacerbated by the removal of classic titles from digital stores or the shutdown of entire platforms. Even recent games face accessibility issues, as was the case with Sony's Concord, which was permanently shut down just a few weeks after its launch earlier this year.

With the introduction of this preservation program, GOG positions itself as one of the few major gaming platforms recognizing the difficult reality of video game preservation, taking significant actions to keep older titles accessible. "Video games have shaped us," the announcement states. "Being able to play them is an essential part of reconnecting with ourselves. They must remain accessible, playable, and active."
