The first international Uber robotaxi service is now operational in the United Arab Emirates.

Uber aims to become a benchmark center for autonomous vehicles.

Uber has launched a robotaxi service in collaboration with WeRide in Abu Dhabi, marking its first international initiative to offer a variety of autonomous vehicles from different operators on its platform. Uber users requesting a ride will have the option to choose a WeRide autonomous vehicle. The fares will be transparent and equivalent to those of UberX and Uber Comfort. Although the vehicles will have safety drivers onboard, it will not be a fully autonomous service at launch. However, both Uber and WeRide have expressed their intention to offer driverless vehicles to passengers by 2025.

The partnership between Uber and WeRide, a startup originating from Guangzhou, China, was first announced in September of last year. WeRide holds permits to operate driverless vehicles in the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, China, and the United States; however, Uber has indicated that it has no plans to expand this collaboration beyond the UAE at this time. WeRide's autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi have already been used through the TXAI app. The company received its permit to test and operate autonomous vehicles on public roads in July 2023.

WeRide had also planned to list its shares in the United States, valuing the company at $5 billion, but has postponed its initial public offering citing the need to complete all necessary documentation. Additionally, the company develops autonomous driving technology for shuttle buses and freight equipment. It began operations in Silicon Valley in 2017 and later incorporated in the Cayman Islands. After winding down its own efforts in developing autonomous vehicles in 2020, Uber has shifted its focus to becoming a hub for any company operating autonomous vehicles worldwide. In addition to WeRide, Uber has agreements with Cruise, Waymo, Motional, and Avride for autonomous cars, as well as with Serve, Cartken, and Nuro for delivery robots.
