The latest Bluesky update fixes a major verification issue.

Bluesky will keep your old .bsky.social identifier private once you verify your domain.

Bluesky has implemented an update that fixes a critical issue related to impersonation on its decentralized social network. Now, when you verify your identity on the platform using your own domain, Bluesky will no longer release your old .bsky.social username. Previously, completing the authentication process made your original .bsky.social name available again, which meant you had to register again to secure it and prevent impostors from claiming it.

The social network has been addressing verification issues that arose following a significant increase in new users in recent months. An analysis conducted by Cornell Tech revealed that 44 percent of the 100 most followed accounts on Bluesky have a doppelgänger. Consequently, Bluesky decided to implement a stricter anti-impersonation policy, requiring that parody, satire, or fan accounts be labeled as such in both their usernames and biographies by the end of November. Additionally, identity swapping, where users start as impostors to gain followers and then change their identity to evade enforcement, has been explicitly banned.

In addition to reserving your old username, the Bluesky app update includes a "Mentions" tab in notifications, making it easier to locate responses to your posts. A new button has also been added that allows users to choose how replies are displayed, enabling them to view them in a linear order or in grouped discussions.
