The co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, suggests a 60-hour workweek, considering it the 'optimal point for productivity.'

I suggest being in the office at least every day of the week.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, has indicated that the company has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in general artificial intelligence if employees intensify their efforts, even suggesting a 60-hour workweek as a possible solution. These comments come in a context where Google seeks to regain its status as a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, especially after the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, which intensified competition in the sector.

According to a report, Brin urged Google workers to come to the office every day of the week. In his statement, he emphasized that being present at the workplace at least from Monday to Friday is crucial. He also mentioned that 60 hours a week represents the "optimal point of productivity" in a message directed at Gemini, the company’s line of artificial intelligence models and applications.

Brin expressed that the competition in the field of artificial intelligence has increased significantly and that it is imperative for Google to accelerate its efforts to lead the race towards general artificial intelligence. He believes the company has all the necessary elements to succeed but emphasizes that efforts need to be multiplied. Additionally, he encouraged engineers to use Google’s AI models to assist in programming, which would enable them to become "the most efficient coders and AI scientists in the world."

In the current context, extended work hours have been proposed earlier by other leaders in the tech sector. For instance, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy suggested a 70-hour workweek last year, and L&T president SN Subrahmanyan recently recommended a 90-hour week. These suggestions reflect the growing pressure to increase productivity while keeping corporate costs under control.
