Steam Deck: The Best Video Games of 2024
PC games anywhere.
Since its launch, the Steam Deck has been constantly improving, and 2024 has been no exception. For many, including the author, this device has become the primary gaming platform, especially since becoming a parent. The ability to access the vast library of Steam games anywhere, whether at home or while the baby is napping, is invaluable. Additionally, Valve continues to incorporate useful features through software updates, such as the option to record gameplay.
For those setting up a Steam Deck for the first time—perhaps one of the limited white models—or those who have put it aside for a while, here are some recommendations for standout games this year, as well as an update on a classic.
Balatro
This new king in the card roguelike genre, Balatro, aims to form poker hands to accumulate chips. During rounds, it’s possible to buy new cards that increase your power, including wildcards that can multiply your chips to impressive figures. When a good streak is achieved in Balatro, the mix of strategy and chance becomes thrilling, and it's easy to jump back in for another round when luck runs out.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The latest RPG installment from BioWare, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is an epic adventure perfect for the Steam Deck. The game features branching dialogues, charismatic characters, and multiple options for character development, with the story divided into smaller quests, ideal for short play sessions. While it’s recommended to adjust the graphics settings for optimal performance, it allows for enjoyable gameplay anywhere.
Hades II
Originally, it was not planned to include games in early access, but Hades II broke that rule. Despite not being complete, it surpasses many titles released this year. The sequel from Supergiant expands on the action roguelike formula of the first game with new weapons and different paths to explore, along with an appealing cast of both new and familiar characters. The difficulty of putting it down before its official release is palpable.
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Atlus’s new RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, continues the successful legacy of Persona games. Battles are fast-paced, and the game is divided into manageable days, easily adjusting performance on the Steam Deck with a few tweaks. Even though I haven’t finished it, the portability of the device allows for progress during free moments.
Neva
This beautiful game tells the story of a young girl and her fox through a visually stunning world. Although it features some combat, most of the gameplay is based on solving platforming puzzles and immersing oneself in its art and music. The narrative addresses deep themes of love and loss, and it can be completed in a few hours, making it ideal for enjoying over a couple of nights by the fireplace.
The Rise of the Golden Idol
For fans of murder mysteries, The Rise of the Golden Idol offers 20 signaling puzzles to solve by investigating scenes and characters. Despite its somewhat grotesque content, the fun lies in delving into the mysteries, even if it sometimes involves dealing with lifeless bodies.
Stardew Valley
Regarded as one of the most played titles on the Steam Deck, Stardew Valley has been enriched by a massive update 1.6 that introduced new festivals and a new type of farm, adding content for veterans of the game as well as those approaching it for the first time.
Thank Goodness You’re Here!
In Thank Goodness You’re Here!, you play a quirky character interacting with the eccentric inhabitants of a quaint English village in a hilarious manner. The narrative features absurd humor and can be enjoyed in about three hours, making it a brief yet memorable delight.
