Is Bluesky Down? The Alternative to Twitter Faces Issues During User Exodus from Elon Musk's X.
Cloudy skies.
Bluesky experienced technical issues on Thursday due to a sudden increase in the number of users joining the platform, seemingly motivated by an exodus from X/Twitter, which is owned by Elon Musk. According to the status page of the Twitter alternative, several of its systems experienced failures around 5:15 p.m. Eastern Time. At that time, Down Detector reported a rise in problem reports.
It is unclear how widespread the inconvenience was, but the app was not functioning properly on both the desktop and mobile versions. When attempting to access it, a spinning circle appeared, as if the app were trying to load. Earlier, Down Detector had also reported a notable increase in the number of reported incidents.
Given the controversy surrounding Musk's support for elected President Donald Trump, the situation at Bluesky may have been anticipated. Many users decided to leave Twitter, causing Bluesky to rapidly climb the Apple App Store, registering an increase of approximately 100,000 new users per day since last week's elections. With such an influx of traffic, it is not surprising that Bluesky is facing operational challenges.
