The declining number of X users: It is estimated that Elon Musk's platform will lose millions of users by 2025.

Millions of people have left X and will continue to do so.

Currently, the exodus of users from X, formerly known as Twitter, following the elections has been widely reported. The platform, which Elon Musk has termed the "everything app," has experienced a notable departure of users. The consequences of the election season, along with Musk's support for Donald Trump, have fueled a rising wave of misinformation and harmful rhetoric flooding users' feeds. This has led to a significant increase in sign-ups and daily usage of Bluesky, an alternative to X.

Although this phenomenon could be seen as a mere temporary post-election effect, new data indicates that X's issues run deeper. In fact, the platform had already begun losing users before the elections. Current projections estimate that millions of users are expected to leave X in the coming year.

Historically, X, when it was Twitter, has seen considerable spikes in traffic and daily active users during major events, such as U.S. presidential elections. However, according to information from SimilarWeb, in the 2024 elections, this boost was fleeting; while there was a surge on election day and in the days immediately following, the platform showed a downward trend in the number of daily active users throughout October.

Specifically, a decrease of between 300,000 and 2.6 million daily active users in the U.S. was reported, with an 8.4 percent drop in users since early October, falling from 32.3 million to 29.6 million.

Analysts have projected that the loss of users from X will continue into 2025. Studies indicate that since Musk acquired X in 2022, it is estimated to lose approximately 7 million monthly active users in the U.S. This decline in the user base also translates into a deterioration of X's value and brand. A recent report from Brand Finance revealed that the brand value of X now stands at $673 million, compared to the $5.7 billion it was worth before Musk's arrival.

Furthermore, the platform's revenue has suffered a 40 percent decline compared to the previous year, according to internal company data from June 2024.
