Drag X Drive highlights mouse control capabilities for the Switch 2.

Although Drag X Drive may not become the next big esports, our experience during the demonstration left us excited about how it utilizes the unique controllers of the Switch 2.

Nintendo surprises with the announcement of Drag X Drive, a new video game designed to showcase the control capabilities offered by the new Joy-Cons. This title, which was unexpectedly presented during a recent exhibition, aims to leverage mouse functions and gyroscope integration. While it has been compared to Arms, the expectation that it will generate a similar long-term series seems uncertain.

The gameplay experience offers a new perspective by introducing wheelchair basketball, where players must use both Joy-Cons to control their movements. During a test of the functionality, it was initially challenging to get used to the controls. The dynamic involved simultaneously moving both Joy-Cons to advance, which complicated coordination. However, once inside an arena designed for six players, the game changed. Here, the subtler movements focused on strategy and placement.

The mechanics of Drag X Drive resemble dynamic human hockey, which facilitated the adaptation to the controls. As the matches progressed, a natural coordination between the players became evident, where actions like passing the ball and defending became more intuitive. The combination of gyroscopic functionality with the mouse system allowed for fluid movements, such as making a shot by raising the joystick hand and performing a shooting gesture.

Despite the game's entertainment value, it is likely that Drag X Drive will be more of a minigame title in the Nintendo Switch Sports lineup than a serious competitor in the esports arena. With no additional content or gameplay variations announced by Nintendo, it seems that its lifespan will be limited once the Switch 2's game library diversifies further. However, its purpose seems more aimed at developers, inspiring them with new ideas for control and gameplay. While Drag X Drive is not expected to achieve major long-term success, its ability to pave the way for creative innovation is undeniable.

Drag X Drive is scheduled to launch this summer on Nintendo Switch 2.
