Audeze's new, more affordable planar magnetic headphones are an ideal choice for mid-range audiophiles.

These new headphones could be a big success.

Audeze has introduced its new LCD-S20 headphones, which stand out for their affordable price compared to other high-end models from the brand. Starting in May 2025, they will be available for £499 / $499 (approximately AU$1,045). Although still considered high-priced among the best wired headphones, the LCD-S20 promises to deliver impressive features at a more accessible cost.

These headphones are closed-back models, meaning they will passively block some external noise. Additionally, they are the first planar headphones to incorporate SLAM technology, which stands for Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator. This system was introduced in the electrostatic CRBN2 headphones, which sell for nearly $6,000. The SLAM technology optimizes diaphragm movement to provide a more linear sound, enhancing bass quality and sound imaging, bringing the open-back headphone sound experience closer to that of closed-back isolation.

The drivers of the LCD-S20 are 90 mm and incorporate three key Audeze technologies: Fluxor magnets, Fazor waveguides, and Uniforce voice coils. These innovations are designed to deliver accurate sound quality with low distortion, elements for which Audeze is well-known.

The structure of these headphones is based on the Maxwell model and features a spring steel headband, along with forged aluminum and glass-infused nylon components, ensuring durability. An innovative aspect is the new magnetic coupling system for the ear pads, which allows for quick and easy swapping. Additionally, the cable is detachable and can be adapted for left or right side use according to user preference.

These headphones are expected to be comparable to the best over-ear models and are generating excitement among audio technology enthusiasts.
