Zomato rebrands as Eternal; social media erupts with funny Marvel memes.
"Why not EATernal?" people ask on the internet.
Deepinder Goyal announced in his letter to shareholders the rebranding of the company to Eternal, along with a new logo and domain. Goyal, a former member of the business panel known as "shark" and CEO of the company, reported that the name 'Eternal' had been used internally since the acquisition of the quick commerce app BlinkIt. In his communication, the alumnus of IIT Delhi highlighted that the new name carries both promises and paradoxes, and admitted to feeling daunted by the change, describing it as "a monumental task that needs to be tackled."
Despite the rumors online about the rebranding, the letter also made it clear that Zomato will remain the name of the food delivery app. Eternal, formerly known as Zomato Ltd., will become the parent brand encompassing the four business areas of the group: Zomato, BlinkIt, District, and Hyperpure. The question remains whether this new identity will work effectively, similar to other major brands like Alphabet (formerly Google) and Meta (formerly Facebook). The results of the upcoming quarterly earnings report will provide more clarity on this matter. For now, the report for the fourth quarter of 2024 has shown disappointing results, with a 57% drop in net profits for Gurugram, from Rs 138 crore in fiscal year 2023 to Rs 59 crore in fiscal year 2024.
Reactions soon flooded in, sparking a wave of memes and humorous comments on X/Twitter, where some users posed questions like "Coming soon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?" Others wondered if numerology influenced the name choice. One user expressed concern that after offering affordable memberships, they should also provide discounts so that people could place orders. Meanwhile, some negative opinions emerged regarding the new name, with one user referencing Sanatana tradition commenting that the new name given to the brand could be seen as bold, as according to the Upanishads, “only Brahma is eternal.” Jokes continued with references to the failure of Marvel's "Eternals" movie, and some even suggested alternatives like "Eaternal" for the new name.
