A new report from an organization dedicated to education in the United States examines the repairability of laptops and smartphones from some of the most recognized tech companies. This analysis provides a repairability score for each device, evaluating its accessibility for repairs.
One notable finding from the report is that while most smartphones are now easier to repair than they were the previous year, the situation for laptops seems to have worsened. For example, HP laptops have become more difficult to repair compared to previous years.
On the laptop list, Asus stands out with an A- repairability rating, being the only company to receive an "A" grade. Acer follows in the rankings with a B+, while Dell, Microsoft, and Samsung share a B- score. HP receives a C, and although Apple shows some improvement, it remains at a C-. Meanwhile, Lenovo gets a D since only one device could be evaluated due to a lack of necessary information from the company.
In France, there is a regulation that requires companies to make their repairability scores public. A study revealed that 86% of French consumers consider this score when making purchasing decisions. However, insufficient information prevented the organization from adequately assessing Lenovo, which received a C in the 2024 report.
In the smartphone arena, Apple and Google tie for first place with a B- rating. Motorola follows with a C+, while Samsung ranks last with a C-.
The "Right to Repair" movement has had a significant impact on the repairability of smartphones. Long-time iPhone users will remember how complicated it was to repair these devices in the past. This movement aims to ensure consumers’ right to modify and repair products, demanding that tech companies provide information about services and replacement parts at affordable prices. However, it seems this movement needs to pay more attention to laptops, where repairability is on the decline.
