Elon Musk seeks to 'improve' Community Notes on X.
Elon Musk seeks to "fix" Community Notes on X as they are questioning claims made by the Trump administration.
Elon Musk has expressed concerns regarding Community Notes, the collaborative fact-checking feature that originated as Birdwatch and was implemented on a large scale following his acquisition of Twitter. In a message, Musk commented that this tool is being "increasingly manipulated by governments and traditional media" and claimed that he is working on a solution.
His discontent seems to be related to how Community Notes contributors have handled misinformation concerning President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the conflict in Ukraine. Musk cited a tweet questioning the credibility of polls indicating that Zelenskyy has a 57 percent approval rating in Ukraine. Such questioning on the platform clashes with Donald Trump’s description of Zelenskyy as a "dictator," as well as Musk's intention for the platform to serve as an unofficial arm of the current administration.
Musk's critique of Community Notes suggests that he has little trust in surveys coming from Zelenskyy himself. In his message, he posed that if the president were truly beloved by the Ukrainian people, there would be no need to question these figures. However, what it implies to "fix" Community Notes remains undefined. Musk has cited posts lacking verifiable sources, indicating a potential distrust in collaborative fact-checking efforts.
Furthermore, the critical interaction with this feature aligns with his actions on X, where he has manipulated the platform's algorithm and removed features that helped establish credibility, such as account verification. This raises the question of what the source of truth would be in an environment where he does not even trust community-driven verifications.
It is essential to note that the idea of Community Notes is no longer exclusive to X, as Meta has begun allowing users to sign up for a similar feature on its platforms. However, the future of Community Notes in its current form now seems uncertain.
