Threads takes a significant step towards full integration in the fediverse.
Fediverse profiles now have greater visibility on Threads.
Meta, through its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has announced that it is now possible to follow fediverse accounts on Threads. This new feature was launched quite limitedly, allowing fediverse users to interact through "likes" and replies, although fediverse posts will not appear on users' timelines. To follow these accounts, users must have previously interacted with a post on Threads.
Although fediverse posts will not directly appear in the feeds, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has confirmed that their profiles and posts are indeed visible on Threads. Additionally, users have the option to receive notifications when those profiles publish new content. Mosseri demonstrated this integration process in a video.
Zuckerberg explained that users can follow fediverse accounts by noticing that they have "liked, followed, or replied" to a federated profile on Threads. Furthermore, Threads developer Peter Cottle mentioned that from now on, fediverse usernames will be visible and accessible in posts on both the web and Android versions, with iOS coming soon. It is important to note that the Threads account must be federated, and the fediverse account must be "eligible to be followed."
Meta, through Seine Kim, has indicated that its goal is to expand the fediverse responsibly, prioritizing a safe, diverse, and content-rich environment, as well as ensuring interoperability among communities. This development is part of a broader plan for Threads to fully integrate with the fediverse in the future. In recent weeks, Threads has accelerated the rollout of new functionalities, which may be related to the growing interest sparked by the Bluesky platform.
