Threads could introduce ads early next year.

It still doesn't contain ads, although that wasn't going to last forever.

Meta could begin including ads on Threads as soon as next year, according to information from a report. As part of its strategy, Threads is expected to allow a limited number of advertisers to create and publish ads starting in January. This aligns with previous reports about implementing ads in July. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has confirmed that Meta intends to introduce advertising on Threads. Mosseri stated, “I understand why people have concerns, but at the end of the day, we’re a business, and Threads needs to make enough money to cover the costs of the personnel and servers required to provide the service for free.”

In its latest earnings report, Meta reported advertising revenue of $39.8 billion during the previous three months, accounting for 97 percent of its total revenue. During a call about financial results, Meta's CFO, Susan Li, commented that Threads is not expected to become a “significant revenue driver” until 2025.

So far, it is unclear how ads will be presented on Threads, although they could appear as "sponsored" posts, a feature recently identified in development by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. When asked about the report, a spokesperson for Meta, Matthew Tye, only shared current information related to the app. “Since our priority is to build value for consumers above all else, there are currently no ads or monetization features in Threads,” Tye stated, without commenting on the company's future plans.

Advertisers may turn to Threads in search of a safer alternative to X, although a recent report suggests that some advertisers are considering returning to X to gain the sympathy of Elon Musk and elected president Donald Trump. On the other hand, Bluesky’s CEO, Jay Graber, has expressed that she will not add ads to that growing platform.
