This entry-level 3D printer performed so remarkably in tests that it almost outshone my favorite machines priced over $1000.

After recently testing various CoreXY printers, the Elegoo Centauri Carbon stands out for its build quality, speed, and precision, even though it does not yet have a multi-filament module.

The Elegoo Centauri Carbon is part of a new generation of fully enclosed CoreXY printers aimed at the entry-level market. Elegoo has built a good reputation in this category of printers, with its Neptune line being among the most reliable and recognized.

Transitioning from a conventional printer to a CoreXY generally offers faster and more precise prints. The setup of the Centauri Carbon was surprisingly quick, requiring only about 10 minutes before starting the first print. The ease of use was remarkable, matching the performance of competitors like Creality and Anycubic, and showing extremely fast performance during its self-checks.

Although in theory the Centauri Carbon is slower than the Creality K2 Plus and the Anycubic S1, in practice it surpassed their speeds during prints beyond the standard test models. The printer includes an auto-leveling system as well as a weight system that minimizes printing errors and notably integrates a camera, which is uncommon in this price range.

The closed structure of the machine allows for a wide compatibility of materials; in tests, PLA, PETG, TPU, and carbon material were used, favoring print quality, especially when utilizing advanced materials. The Centauri Carbon does not break the mold, but it offers an excellent price-to-quality ratio, making it a solid and well-designed option.

Design

Upon taking the Centauri Carbon out of its box, its considerable weight for a relatively small size was noticeable, which can be attributed to its fully integrated chassis that enhances stability. This is reflected in the printer's robust construction, featuring reinforced aluminum alloy pillars and stainless steel side panels.

The printer includes a front glass door and a 4.3-inch touchscreen for intuitive control. While it may not have an automatic ventilation system, the build quality and overall design are outstanding, providing significant value for the price.

With a print area of 256 × 256 × 256 mm and an included flexible magnetic base, easy removal of printed models is ensured. The printer uses a USB port for file transfers and a standard filament holder, though its design does not facilitate the use of dry boxes.

In terms of features, this machine includes a 0.4 mm nozzle that can be changed according to needs, as well as the ability to reach temperatures of up to 320°C.

Performance

The initial setup was quick, and despite its weight, the machine feels well-balanced. After conducting test prints, the efficiency and speed of the Centauri Carbon became evident, delivering high-quality examples. A test model, such as the 3DBenchy, was completed in just over 15 minutes with satisfactory results.

The printer demonstrates great precision when handling negative spaces, overhangs, and bridges. It was also positively compared to the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon, noting that the Centauri Carbon performs its safety checks and heats the nozzle more efficiently.

Conclusion

The Elegoo Centauri Carbon positions itself as a strong competitor in the low-cost CoreXY printer segment, offering fast and reliable print quality. With a well-conceived design and the ability to print with carbon fiber straight out of the box, it emerges as an outstanding option for those seeking quality at an accessible price.

While it may not be ideal for those needing multi-filament capabilities immediately, the Centauri Carbon is an excellent choice for those looking for a balance between price, features, and performance.
