The upcoming Apple Studio Display could receive a much-needed Mini LED update.

We just need to improve the camera and we'll be ready.

Apple is working on developing a new 27-inch monitor with Mini LED backlighting, expected to be released in 2025 or early next year, according to analysis from Ross Young. This monitor is considered an evolution of the Studio Display launched in 2022 and will maintain its size, but promises significant improvements in contrast, black levels, and possibly an increase in overall brightness.

Upon its launch, the original Studio Display fell behind compared to modern televisions and many other monitors due to its traditional LED technology, which illuminates the entire panel continuously. The Mini LED technology allows for a more vibrant and contrasted image thanks to multiple local dimming zones behind the screen, which can be turned on and off individually depending on the displayed content.

While the current Studio Display already offers excellent color accuracy and a sharp 5K resolution, it can suffer from issues such as backlight bleeding and other irregularities typical of conventional LED panels. The transition to Mini LED could improve the monitor's uniformity and achieve deeper blacks when watching videos, desirable aspects for a monitor that starts at a price of $1,599.

Additionally, it is likely that Apple will seek to improve the built-in camera in the upcoming Studio Display, as camera quality has been a weak point since its launch, leading the company to implement a firmware update to enhance its clarity. However, the integrated speakers of the Studio Display have been satisfactory, eliminating the need for external speakers on the desk.

Apple's high-end monitor, the Pro Display XDR, already utilizes Mini LED technology, although it hasn't received updates since 2020. The company has improved its approach to backlighting in later products, such as the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models and earlier versions of the iPad Pro.
