Gemini Advanced can now remember your previous conversations to enhance its responses.

Starting today, Google's Gemini chatbot will be able to remember previous conversations to provide more helpful responses.

Google has implemented improvements to its chatbot Gemini, allowing it to remember past conversations to provide more helpful responses. This new functionality makes it easier for users not to have to start from scratch or search through threads of previous conversations, enabling them to build upon prior dialogues or ongoing projects. Additionally, Gemini will be able to indicate if a previous exchange has been referenced when formulating a response.

For those who feel uncomfortable with the idea of the chatbot retaining personal information, Google assures users that they have the option to review, delete, or set a specific timeframe for retaining chat history. Moreover, there is the possibility to completely disable this feature from the My Activity panel.

Although Gemini incorporates this memory capability, it is not a pioneer in this aspect, as other chatbots like ChatGPT also remember relevant information in certain contexts. For instance, when asked about Jeff Buckley’s vocal range, the subsequent chatbot inquired whether the user was a fan of his music, indicating that its memory had been updated.

In a broader sense, the development of chatbots with long-term memory capabilities is part of the future vision of "agentic" artificial intelligence that various companies, including Google and OpenAI, are pursuing. During the I/O 2024 event, Google presented Project Astra, which also featured integrated memory, although it had a limited temporal range and could "remember incorrectly" certain data.

The new memory function of Gemini is currently being rolled out in English for Gemini Advanced subscribers and is expected to be available in more languages in the coming weeks.
