The trailer for the new season of Doctor Who teases new mysteries, chilling cartoons, and musical craziness.
There will also be a new face (although not so new) joining the TARDIS.
The first full trailer for the new season of Doctor Who has been released, set to premiere in April on Disney+ internationally and on BBC iPlayer in the UK. This preview hints at an exciting journey through time and space, while the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, faces sinister cinemas, an Intergalactic Song Gala, and the return of the enigmatic Mrs. Flood, portrayed by Anita Dobson.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the trailer is the introduction of the new companion Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu. Her appearance as a different character in last season’s episode "Boom" seems to have been more than just a simple audition to impress the producers. Throughout the trailer, glimpses of Sethu's original character, Mundy Flynn, can be seen as the Doctor comments that "there's something that already connects us." This could suggest that Belinda may resemble a character like Clara, who impacts the Doctor's journey in unexpected ways. Nevertheless, the new companion doesn’t seem overly excited about the adventure, as the season's plot will revolve around her attempt to return to Earth.
The trailer also introduces the new villain, Mr. Ring-a-Ding, played by Alan Cumming, who alarming emerges from the screen in 1952 to cause animated chaos. Additionally, it confirms that we haven't seen the last of Dobson's mischievous neighbor, who appears in the audience of a version of the Eurovision song contest that spans multiple universes, hosted by Rylan Clark.
The return of former companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) is also expected, along with Mel (Bonnie Langford) and Kate (Jemma Redgrave), although the latter two are preparing for their own UNIT spin-off.
This trailer arrives amidst rumors of the show's potential cancellation, fueled by speculation that Gatwa may have left the role and that Disney, disappointed by last season's viewership, might be looking to end their production partnership. However, the BBC has dismissed these rumors, stating that "Doctor Who has not been suspended. As we previously indicated, the decision regarding Season 3 will be made after the premiere of Season 2."
If Gatwa were to step down after the second season, it would mark the shortest tenure for an actor in the role of the Doctor, excluding David Tennant's appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor in the 60th-anniversary special, since the surprising departure of Christopher Eccleston after just one season in 2005. It's important to note that there are no official confirmations regarding an imminent change in the Doctor, and attention is focused on what the new season will bring, set to air on BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus on April 12.
