The parent company of T-Mobile develops an 'AI Phone' alongside Perplexity Assistant.

It's the phone without apps.

Deutsche Telekom has announced the development of a new device called the "AI Phone," powered by the Perplexity chatbot, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This innovative phone, which will be officially launched later this year, will operate with "Magenta AI," providing users with access to tools such as Perplexity Assistant, Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart, as well as a diverse set of artificial intelligence applications.

The concept of this smartphone was revealed at MWC 2024 by Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, describing it as a "no-app" device primarily controlled via voice. The AI Phone will allow users to perform tasks such as booking flights and restaurant tables. Its capabilities are similar to those of expanded action models, including the Rabbit R1. In a press release, Claudia Nemat, a board member of Deutsche Telekom, emphasized that the AI Phone can request a taxi or make purchases without needing to switch between different applications.

Additionally, some of the artificial intelligence tools, such as Perplexity's AI search engine, will be available on other devices through the MeinMagenta app, which has recently launched an Android version of its assistant. Although Deutsche Telekom has not provided many details about the hardware of the AI Phone, images suggest that it is a mid-range to budget device with a design featuring sharp edges and a pink power button.

The launch of the AI Phone is expected to take place in the second half of this year. Moreover, during the summer, the company will integrate some of the artificial intelligence features of Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart into the MeinMagenta app, which will be compatible with other smartphones.
