The Honeywell Home X2S smart thermostat is Matter compatible and priced at just $80.
We like big buttons.
Resideo has recently introduced the Honeywell Home X2S, an entry-level smart thermostat that, while not remarkable in design, offers an economical option for those looking to save on their energy bills. With a launch price of $79.99, this thermostat is Matter-compatible, allowing for easy integration with systems like Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, thus facilitating control over home heating and cooling.
Scheduled for release in the spring, the X2S focuses on simplicity and energy efficiency. Its large, bright display, along with oversized cushioned buttons, makes it easy to adjust the temperature. Additionally, it is compatible with existing Honeywell Home wiring plates, which can simplify installation by eliminating the need for wiring modifications.
The model promises an average savings of 22% on heating and 17% on cooling when using the recommended set points in the app. This is the first Honeywell Home thermostat to support Matter, enabling climate control from any compatible ecosystem. It can also be used alongside Resideo's First Alert app to access advanced features, such as scheduling and an automatic away mode that uses geofencing to adjust the thermostat when leaving home, contributing to energy savings.
Rated with the Energy Star label, the X2S requires a C wire and is compatible with up to two stages of heating and cooling in conventional systems, or up to two stages of heating and one stage of cooling in heat pump systems. It also monitors humidity and provides reminders for air filter replacements, although it is not compatible with Honeywell Home room sensors.
With nearly 80% of homes still without connected thermostats, Resideo has designed this product as an accessible option for those looking to upgrade their systems. The incorporation of Matter could ease connections with various smart home platforms and promote the adoption of this technology. David Kaufman, Resideo’s director of strategic initiatives, commented that "the price and features of the Honeywell Home X2S make it the ideal upgrade from a non-connected thermostat to a connected one."
In terms of competition, while Google’s Nest thermostat also supports Matter, its price is higher, reaching $129.99. Meross has recently launched another Matter-compatible thermostat for $99, both featuring a more streamlined design than the X2S and using touch interfaces instead of physical buttons. Meanwhile, Amazon offers a similarly priced smart thermostat, but limited only to compatibility with Alexa.
