The Google Android Beta 16 incorporates support for Auracast.

The new beta version of Android includes support for Auracast on devices with Samsung Galaxy One UI 7, as well as on devices with Android 15 and Pixel 9.

The latest beta version of Android 16, recently released for developers, includes support for Auracast, a technology that allows hearing aids and headphones to connect to both public and private audio streams, leveraging the Bluetooth LE standard. During a demonstration of this technology at CES 2024, its utility in environments where public service announcements may be difficult to hear, especially for people with hearing impairments, was showcased. This advancement in Android 16's support represents a significant step toward broader implementation.

The update will enable compatible devices, whether hearing aids from brands like GN Hearing or Starkey, or headphones like the JBL Tour 3 Pro, to connect to broadcasts from compatible televisions or public transmitters using Samsung Galaxy devices with One UI 7, Android 15, or Google Pixel 9 utilizing the Android 16 beta. Those using hearing aids will be able to apply their personalized settings to the broadcasts.

Additionally, an option to connect to audio streams via a QR code will be introduced, eliminating the need to access device settings. This functionality will first be available on Pixel 9 devices. As Auracast is implemented in more products, there is immense potential for its use in everyday life, such as increased flexibility when watching television, allowing multiple people to listen to the same broadcast with language options and frequency adjustments to enhance understanding.

There is also the possibility of connecting to specific audio streams in environments like airports, addressing announcements related to boarding gates or delay notifications. This includes the use of headphones, hearing aids, or personal assistive devices, as long as they have Auracast technology enabled. The inclusion of Auracast promises to enhance auditory accessibility, a development that is celebrated in the tech field.
