The FBI alerts voters about fake videos related to election security.
The FBI has reported that it is aware of two videos containing false information that claim to be produced by the agency.
The FBI issued a statement on Saturday regarding some misleading videos circulating ahead of the elections, informing that it is aware of two of these videos that "falsely claim to be from the FBI concerning election security." One of these videos suggests that the FBI had "arrested three groups linked to electoral fraud," while the other involves Kamala Harris's husband. The agency indicated that both videos contain false information.
Disinformation, which includes the dissemination of political deepfakes and other types of misleading visual content, has been a significant concern in the lead-up to the presidential elections in the United States. In its statement posted on X, the FBI added that electoral integrity is one of its top priorities and that it is closely collaborating with local and state authorities to address electoral threats and protect communities while citizens exercise their right to vote. The attempt to mislead the public with false content about FBI operations undermines the democratic process and seeks to erode trust in the electoral system.
A day earlier, the FBI, along with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), had traced two other videos back to "Russian influence actors," including one that “falsely showed individuals claiming to be from Haiti and illegally voting in multiple counties in Georgia.”
