The DOGE website appears to be so vulnerable that anyone can edit it.

Researchers have revealed that it is possible to apply digital graffiti to the website of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) if one knows where to look. Two web development experts noted that the site does not appear to be hosted on government servers, allowing its database to be modified by those who manage to locate it. Currently, a message is still visible that reads: "these 'experts' left their database open - roro."

Elon Musk, head of the DOGE and advisor to Donald Trump, announced that his team was committed to being as transparent as possible, sharing updates on their actions through an account on X and on their website. Despite this, it was reported that the DOGE site was almost empty at that time. Since then, it has been rapidly developed to display a feed of posts from the agency’s X account, as well as information about the federal workforce.

Researchers reported that the site appears to have been created using Cloudflare Pages instead of government servers. After examining the site’s architecture and API endpoints, one of them managed to locate the database containing statistics about government employees. This individual made modifications to the database entries, which were reflected on the DOGE page.

This is not the first time that a federal website during the Trump administration has appeared to be created hastily. Just this week, the website waste.gov was blocked after it was reported that it displayed a WordPress page with placeholder text.

The DOGE acknowledges that there may be issues with its online presence. In a footnote on its site, it reads: "This is DOGE's effort to create a complete organizational chart for the government." While it is a monumental task, they admit that there are likely errors or omissions and that they will continue to strive for maximum accuracy over time.

However, the situation does not inspire much confidence in a team tasked with making significant cuts to government spending and that is supposedly infiltrating federal systems containing sensitive information about employees and citizens. Perhaps the decision to reduce staff at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency of the Department of Homeland Security was not the best one.
