The Callisto Protocol spinoff is a quirky and entertaining clone of Hades.
The first game derived from The Callisto Protocol, [REDACTED], is presented as a Hades-inspired version with a horror theme, although it also includes some original ideas that set it apart.
Redacted is a new title from Striking Distance Studios that presents a surprising reinterpretation of the universe of The Callisto Protocol. Unlike the serious and realistic tone of the original game, this installment delves into a vibrant pop art style and exaggerated comedy, taking players on a journey to fight their way out of the alien-infested Black Iron prison. This distanced approach results in a unique experience, reminiscent of an isometric roguelike in the vein of Hades, filled with sarcastic humor and punk rock music.
From the outset, the gameplay of Redacted resembles that of Hades, with familiar mechanics including running through rooms, battling enemies with a bat and a gun. Just like in the original game, there are upgrades and non-playable characters (NPCs) whose stories unfold as you progress through multiple attempts. The gameplay allows experimentation with a variety of weapons and abilities, creating an exciting pace that kept me hooked.
However, the title does not achieve the depth that has made Hades so special. While the mechanics are fun, the repetitiveness of the four available biomes becomes a long-term issue. Despite its limitations, Redacted introduces interesting concepts, such as AI-controlled competitors also trying to escape, generating a sense of urgency in each attempt.
Another novel aspect is the interruption menu that allows players to interfere with the actions of rivals, adding a strategic and exciting element to the experience. Additionally, players can uncover information about their opponents through files that, once discovered, apply permanent debuffs. These mechanics add variety and require the player to adopt a more aggressive approach.
In terms of tone, Redacted significantly distances itself from the dark atmosphere characteristic of The Callisto Protocol. It features dialogues aiming for irreverence, but often come off as unoriginal and overly childish. This comedic direction may alienate players expecting a continuation of the original style.
Despite the above, Redacted seems to be a conscious attempt by Striking Distance to play with their intellectual property in a lighter way, shifting the game's focus from horror to a more carefree style. Although the game may be criticized for its differences from the original material, it also presents interesting ideas that could make it appealing within the roguelike genre.
Redacted is set to release on October 31 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
