The best smart plugs for 2025.

To determine which smart plug you should add to your connected home, we tested ten devices using Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.

Smart home technology stands out especially for its ability to operate intuitively and automatically, reducing the need for frequent manual intervention. One example is how I’ve connected my lamps to smart plugs, allowing them to turn on at dusk and off at 10 PM, or when I say goodnight to Alexa. For over a year, I haven’t relied on physical switches or navigated in the dark in my home.

However, not all smart plugs provide seamless integration, and compatibility with different home ecosystems can vary. Currently, the best plug for almost everyone is the Kasa Mini EP25, although there are other standout models depending on each user’s specific needs. After testing about 15 alternatives, the best smart plugs available have been selected.

The Kasa Mini EP25, from TP-Link, stood out for its straightforward installation process and reliable operation. At an affordable price of approximately $13, this plug is compatible with the most popular platforms and features an intuitive app that allows users to set timers, schedules, and vacation modes. Unlike other models, the EP25 is the updated version of the HS103, adding compatibility with HomeKit, which enables control from iOS and Android devices without complications.

Installation is quick, using a QR code for initial setup, although some adjustments may be required depending on the smart home platform used. During the testing weeks, the EP25 maintained a stable connection, even when moved to areas far from the router, which speaks to its robustness. However, the Kasa app does not allow sharing control of the plug with other users directly, which may be an inconvenience for some.

Another recommended plug is the Amazon plug, ideal for homes that have integrated Echo devices. This plug allows for a direct and quick connection since it already has the user’s information, without needing to open other apps. However, its use is limited to Amazon devices, which could be a drawback if greater interoperability is desired.

For those seeking an option with energy monitoring, the Kasa KP125M stands out as one of the best Matter-enabled plugs. Its ease of use and multi-platform connectivity make it ideal for those who want more detailed control over their energy consumption. However, some users reported connectivity issues with HomeKit that could hinder optimal functionality without a dedicated hub.

Meross, on the other hand, offers a smart plug with dual outlets that allows control of two devices independently, which is convenient in situations where plug space is limited. Although its initial setup requires some learning, it provides a good overall experience once configured.

Additionally, outdoor plugs allow control of patio lighting and festive decorations. Designed to withstand the elements, their installation is similar to indoor models, though it may require a bit more maneuvering with the initial Bluetooth connectivity.

In summary, when acquiring a smart plug, it’s important to consider its compatibility with existing systems, ease of installation, and additional features such as energy monitoring. The variety of options available in the market allows each user to find the model that best suits their needs and further enhance home automation.
