The Best Music Streaming Platforms for 2025.

We compared Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, and other music streaming services to determine which ones are truly worth it.

Spotify, the most popular music streaming service, offers a variety of plans that cater to different needs. This includes a free option with ads, an individual plan for $12 per month, a duo plan for $17, and a family plan that allows up to six members for $20. Additionally, students can access a plan for just $6 per month. The streaming quality goes up to 320 kbps in Ogg Vorbis format.

One of Spotify's standout features is its wide compatibility with a variety of devices and platforms. The Spotify Connect feature makes it easy to switch devices without interrupting playback. While the free plan has limitations, such as ads and restrictions on the number of song skips, it provides access to much of the music and podcast catalog, along with some social features.

Regarding social features, Spotify allows users to follow friends, discover and collaborate on playlists from other users, as well as share their own mixes. An eagerly anticipated event each year is Spotify Wrapped, which summarizes the year's musical trends. The app also provides information on tour dates for various artists and links for purchasing tickets and merchandise.

Spotify has invested in podcast and audiobook content, integrating it into its platform. Many popular shows are available, and paid subscribers can enjoy up to 15 hours of audiobook streaming. Unlike other services, the platform focuses on playlists rather than full albums, using algorithms to suggest music. Among its playlists, "Discover Weekly" stands out for personalizing recommendations based on the user's tastes.

However, the Spotify interface can be confusing. The desktop app features a sidebar that allows quick access to the library, while the mobile version displays several playlists and podcasts at the top. The arrangement of playlists can make navigation challenging, as some recommendations may not align with the user's interests. Moreover, the app tends to mix content abruptly, resulting in a somewhat disjointed experience.

Despite its focus on playlists, it should be noted that Spotify has been criticized for the lack of lossless streaming. Although a "HiFi" tier with CD quality was announced four years ago, it has yet to be implemented. It's also worth mentioning that the cost of its Premium plan is one dollar more expensive than that of Apple Music. In addition to this, Spotify has faced backlash for low artist payouts, which has tarnished its reputation.

Despite these issues, Spotify continues to offer enough attractive features to make it a valuable option for certain users, although some see its model as a representation of the more serious concerns within the streaming industry.
