The Best Commander Promotions in Civilization 7
In Civilization 7, instead of upgrading individual units, only Commander units will now be upgraded. These are the key skills where you should prioritize your investment.
In Civilization 7, the combat dynamics have undergone significant changes compared to previous versions of the series. In earlier titles, each military unit could gain experience and level up. Now, with the introduction of commanders, they are the only units that can improve and have skills that carry over to the new Eras. These new commanders do not participate directly in battles, but their various abilities can greatly enhance your army's performance.
Commanders have two key functions on the battlefield. First, they can "pack" adjacent units, grouping four or more units to move together with the commander, which simplifies tactical deployments. The second function is to provide bonuses and allow coordinated movements for nearby units. The presence of a commander near your forces grants various benefits, in addition to the option to command multiple units to attack the same target simultaneously. Experience is gained simply by being close to units that succeed in defeating an enemy.
There are several promotions that can be unlocked to maximize the usefulness of commanders on the battlefield:
-
Steadfast: This should be one of the first upgrades in the Bastion tree that you unlock. It grants adjacent land units a +2 combat strength bonus when defending, which is particularly advantageous in the early stages of the game.
-
Initiative: This is another essential upgrade that you should obtain quickly. While packing units is effective, unpacking can leave your troops unable to act in the next turn. This skill allows you to reorganize your units after deploying them, helping to keep them safe.
-
Storm: Improves ranged attacks, which is fundamental for any army, as it allows for attacking without taking retaliation. With greater power in these attacks, victory becomes more attainable.
-
Field Medic: Although it does not allow for healing in the same combat, this ability enables healing multiple units without needing to spend turns fortifying them.
-
Barrage: This is a late-game unlock worth pursuing in the Leadership tree. It increases the combat strength of all units using Focus Fire by +5, allowing them to concentrate their attack on a single target, making it easier to eliminate enemies each turn.
Additionally, Civilization 7 introduces cross-platform support, enabling cross-play between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch, although with certain limitations. While PlayStation and Xbox platforms can host up to five players in certain modes, Switch players have a limit of four in some of these modes. Furthermore, the size of the maps may also be restricted for Switch players, leading to certain limitations in cross-play matches.
