Sony unveils a new version of the best affordable 4K Blu-ray player, removing streaming technology, although the price seems odd.
I hope we are not paying more for a player who performs less.
Sony has introduced the UBP-X700K, a simplified version of the UBP-X700. This new model does not include Wi-Fi connectivity or streaming features, raising expectations in the market. Surprisingly, the price in Japan is 25% higher than that of the previous model, which raises questions about this decision.
The new version, Sony's first in the Blu-ray player field since 2019, appears to have eliminated several features, which could be confusing for some consumers. Despite the reduction in functions, the company has been asked for information regarding availability and exact pricing to clarify the situation.
The Japanese publication Monohika has noted that the UBP-X700K is essentially a more economical and straightforward option compared to its predecessor. One of the most significant changes is the absence of wireless networking features, meaning there will be no streaming applications, nor the ability to use Spotify Connect or screen mirroring. The Video & TV SideView app has also been removed.
The rationale behind eliminating streaming functions is to offer a more accessible Blu-ray player at a time when many households have smart televisions. However, this may not align with the expectations of current buyers who seek more comprehensive capabilities in their devices.
The design is classic Sony, in a black tone, with an Ethernet port, two HDMI ports (one for audio only), and a coaxial digital output on the back. This player is compatible with HDR10 and Dolby Vision, as well as offering audio in Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats, functioning appropriately with UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVDs.
The new player is expected to be available between April and May 2025, and it is anticipated that its cost will be appealing to those interested in physical media, especially considering the advantages of 4K Blu-ray discs over streaming.
