Sony returns to 2005 with the launch of its new Blu-ray.
This new 4K Blu-ray player, the Sony UBP-X700 / K, is expected to hit the Japanese market between April and May. It is an updated version of the previous UBP-X700 model.
Sony has decided to revive the Blu-ray market by introducing a new model called the Sony UBP-X700 / K, scheduled for release in Japan between April and May. This new player is based on the UBP-X700, a device that has been well-received by physical entertainment enthusiasts on a budget. However, the new version has some shortcomings compared to its predecessor, as it has lost much of its wireless connectivity capabilities, which include features like Spotify Connect and access to streaming platforms such as Netflix. Nonetheless, the X700/K retains important features such as support for Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X.
Despite this revival, the new player may not be available outside of Japan. This move by Sony marks a significant return to the Blu-ray business after the company announced a few months ago the shutdown of this type of production.
On another note, the company has also revealed that it is in the gradual phase of closing the production and development of recordable optical discs, such as BD-RE and BD-R, as well as professional discs for video production. Sony stated that this transition will take place at its facilities in Tagajo City, Japan, and will lead to the discontinuation of several disc formats. This change symbolizes the end of an era that began in the late 90s and early 2000s, characterized by the prevalence of pirated copies in formats like CD and Blu-ray.
Additionally, in a different area of technology, Sony unveiled a new augmented reality headset at the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California. This device, known as the "Spatial Content Creation System," includes features such as 4K OLED displays and a system powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 + Gen 2 chip.
Meanwhile, ASUS has announced its new Vivobook S 15, a device that represents its first PC Copilot+, designed to incorporate artificial intelligence features. With the launch of this model, the company hopes to mark the beginning of a new era in personal computing.
