Samsung's new rugged devices keep the traditions of classic mobile phones alive.
Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy XCover 7 Pro and the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro, a smartphone and a tablet that feature user-replaceable batteries.
Samsung has recently unveiled two new rugged devices from the Galaxy series, the Galaxy XCover 7 Pro and the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro, designed for those who prefer the traditional functionality of smartphones. Both devices feature removable back panels and replaceable batteries.
The Galaxy XCover 7 Pro is primarily aimed at business customers, but it incorporates some of the artificial intelligence features that Samsung has been integrating into its high-end phones, such as Google search capabilities and object removal. This model operates with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chip, has a brighter display, and a 4,350 mAh battery. However, its main appeal lies in its superior durability and customizability compared to conventional phones. It boasts water and dust resistance with an IP68 rating, MIL-STD-810H certification for drops, programmable buttons, built-in charging pins, and the ability to change the battery simply by removing the back cover.
On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro features a 10.1-inch display and uses the same chip as the XCover 7 Pro, but offers more charging options. Samsung states that the tablet can function without a battery if connected to a dock, in addition to allowing battery changes without needing to power off the device. This tablet also enjoys the durability features of the XCover 7 Pro, including the same water and dust resistance that extends to its S-Pen.
Although neither of these models is intended for the average user, they represent a clear example of how features that were once common, such as replaceable batteries, have become rare. Despite high-end phones becoming lighter and sleeker, the question arises as to whether XCover owners are the ones truly enjoying a better experience.
The Galaxy XCover 7 Pro is expected to be available for orders starting May 8, 2025, while the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro is scheduled to launch in early June, according to Samsung.
