Riot is creating a card game based on League of Legends.
It is expected to begin in China in early 2025.
The universe of League of Legends is expanding once again, this time with the launch of a physical card game. Riot Games has announced that a collectible card game set in this universe is in development, currently titled “Project K.” The company is collaborating with an undisclosed partner in China with the intention of launching the game in that country in early 2025. As for its global release, Riot has indicated that it will take its time to find the right publishing partners.
Although not many details about Project K have been revealed yet, Riot mentions that the game features unique gameplay and is best enjoyed in the company of friends and in person. The development is led by director Dave Guskin and producer Chengran Chai. Images have been shared to give an idea of the game’s design.
This project is not the first to originate from the League universe. Previously, titles such as Teamfight Tactics and Wild Rift have been launched for mobile devices, along with the Netflix series called Arcane and the competitive fighting game 2XKO, which is set to be released next year. However, not all of these initiatives have been successful. In January, Riot announced the reduction of more than 500 jobs, which included the closure of Riot Forge Games, a label intended to support independent game developers in the League universe. Legends of Runeterra, a card game released in 2020, was also affected, which according to Riot “has not performed as expected.”
The news about Project K comes at a time when card games are experiencing a resurgence, largely driven by the new smartphone version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
