Part of Reddit's content may soon be behind a paywall.
In a recent call about financial results, Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, mentioned that paid subreddits are a developing project and their potential launch could be imminent.
In a recent earnings conference, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced that new types of paid subreddits are being developed, which will require a subscription for access. This announcement comes shortly after Reddit reported profits of $29.9 million in the third quarter of 2024. When asked about the progress of the paid subreddits, Huffman mentioned that they are currently in development and are working on it at this time. Additionally, the CEO highlighted that "new key features" are being planned for the platform, such as Reddit Answers and paid subreddits, although no details were provided on how they will be implemented.
Theoretically, paid subreddits would represent new communities, ensuring that existing subreddits would not be affected by a paywall. In August 2024, Huffman clarified that the free version of Reddit would remain a priority and would continue to thrive.
The idea of member-only subreddits is not new, as evidenced by R/Lounge, which can only be accessed with Reddit Gold, a service that requires payment. While users sometimes gift a month of Reddit Gold to those who post valuable comments or content, the functioning of this community illustrates how this new approach could develop. However, Huffman did not clarify whether users would receive compensation for their contributions in these paid subreddits, leaving uncertainties about the benefits they might offer.
The Reddit Contributor Program could be a possible foundation, although it presents some challenges. According to its terms, users can "create high-quality content or applications to earn based on rewards, karma, purchases, and the engagement their content receives." To qualify for the payout threshold, accounts must receive a total of rewards equivalent to 1,000 Reddit Gold, which translates to approximately $10.
Huffman did not provide a timeline for the launch of these modifications, although a fully paid subreddit could be expected by the end of 2025.
