Netflix cancels the addition of six previously announced games to its platform.
Netflix continues to modify its strategy in the world of video games. The most recent decision has been to cancel the release of six games on its platform.
In recent months, Netflix has been transforming its gaming division, making changes to the library of titles offered to its subscribers at no additional cost. The company has decided to cancel the release of six games that were scheduled for iOS and Android through its platform.
Among the titles that will no longer be added to the offering are Thirsty Suitors, Compass Point: West, and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game. Additionally, three Klei Entertainment games will also not be offered: Don't Starve Together, Lab Rat, and Rotwood. A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed this decision, explaining that the removal of these planned additions is "a natural part of adjusting our portfolio as we learn more about what our members enjoy."
Despite this, Tales of the Shire, a life simulation game with a cozy hobbit-themed setting, will continue on its path to Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S next month. For its part, the action RPG Thirsty Suitors received positive reviews upon its launch on PC and consoles in 2023. Don't Starve Together, which is a cooperative expansion of Don't Starve, a popular survival game released in 2013, will also be pulled.
A significant change in Netflix's gaming division occurred last summer when the company welcomed a new leader for the department. Since then, they have been removing several games from their library, and in October, it was revealed that they had closed their AAA studio, known as Team Blue. On the other hand, Leanne Loombe, an executive who played a crucial role in bringing titles like Hades and Grand Theft Auto to Netflix's library, recently took over as head of games at Annapurna Interactive following a series of departures from the company.
As for its future plans, Netflix intends to add more conventional and high-profile games to its catalog, with the WWE 2K series being one of the expected additions later this year. Furthermore, the company is focused on developing games based on its most well-known franchises, as well as narrative titles, party games, and couch co-op games, along with productions aimed at a children's audience, according to recent earnings reports.
