Netflix's foray into video games will include couch co-op and two-player modes.

A Netflix executive commented on the company's progress in the video game sector and announced plans to release party and couch cooperative games in the near future.

During a recent call regarding the fourth quarter results of 2024, Gregory Peters, co-CEO of Netflix, commented on the initial positive progress the platform has experienced since the launch of its gaming section. Peters explained that the company has ambitious plans for the future of video games within its service, including the implementation of party games and couch co-op games that users will be able to stream online.

Although Netflix began testing its game streaming technology last year, these tests were quite limited, and the results were not clearly known. However, the company has decided to continue investing in this technology and expand its reach. "We see it as a successor to family board game nights or an evolution of what television contests used to be," Peters added, referring to the launch of party and couch co-op games.

Additionally, Peters highlighted that Netflix will continue to incorporate popular titles, such as GTA, which has reached tens of millions of downloads, into its gaming offering. It will also continue to release video games based on its series, as they tend to become favorites among users. For example, Squid Game: Unleashed has reached the top position on action game charts in 107 countries and is on track to become the most downloaded game on Netflix.

Peters noted that the company is already seeing "positive impacts on the acquisition and retention of members who play." While acknowledging that the positive effects of video games on the platform are still "relatively small," he emphasized that the budget allocated for video games is lower than that for series and movies. Because of this, Netflix plans to "increase that investment" as it observes benefits in attracting new subscribers and retaining existing ones.
