Mark Cerny of PlayStation delves into the PS5 Pro and Sony's new collaboration with AMD.

Mark Cerny from PlayStation revealed a new collaboration between AMD and Sony, focused on machine learning, and provided technical details about the development of the PS5.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of PlayStation, returns to detail the graphic enhancements of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Cerny first introduced this console in September, and now, through a new 37-minute video, he dives deeper into how the device's improved GPU utilizes AMD technology, while also announcing a "deeper collaboration" between Sony and the chip manufacturer.

The PlayStation 5 uses AMD's RDNA 2 GPU architecture, which was originally launched in 2020, while the PS5 Pro incorporates what Cerny refers to as RDNA 2.X. This new GPU combines features from the PS5 with selected elements from AMD's more advanced RDNA 3 architecture introduced in 2022. Additionally, ray tracing techniques are integrated that, according to Cerny, stem from future RDNA technology on AMD's roadmap, along with customized machine learning features for the PS5 Pro. These machine learning components are, effectively, a key aspect of the collaboration between AMD and Sony.

Cerny expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with AMD, stating, "AMD has been a fantastic partner for SIE for many years," and added that they are beginning a deeper collaboration focused on machine learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay. The project, dubbed "Amethyst," primarily aims to create "a more ideal architecture for machine learning." The new hardware architectures being developed by both companies could benefit future consoles and AMD's own GPUs, although they are just part of a broader plan. They are also working on the "democratization of machine learning," an initiative that could lead to software tools that make it easier for developers to implement artificial intelligence in graphics and gameplay.

The video is packed with information about the design and engineering process of the PS5 Pro and is intriguing for those who wish to learn more about what the term "Pro" entails in this context. While this content may not convince everyone to upgrade to the new $700 console, it does demonstrate that Sony is serious about the development of the device.
