List of all IMAX theaters available in Spain.

Do you want to experience the best cinematic experience? We show you where to find IMAX theaters in Spain and what makes them different from the others.

If you are a film enthusiast seeking an exceptional audiovisual experience, IMAX theaters stand out as the ideal choice. These theaters feature giant screens, surround sound systems, and superior image quality that completely immerse you in the story you are watching. In Spain, there are several locations that offer the IMAX format, although none of them show films in the exclusive 70 mm format. Below is a guide on where to find them and what to expect from each.

The IMAX system, which stands for "Maximum Image," sets a standard for film projection that prioritizes image and sound quality. Screens in this format tend to be considerably wider, and often have a curvature that helps reduce acoustic distortion. The design of the theaters is also optimized to create a total immersion environment, with multiple speakers placed in strategic locations that enhance the auditory experience. Unlike the 4DX format, which focuses on offering interactivity through physical effects, IMAX centers on visual and audio quality.

Currently, there are six cinemas in different cities across Spain that exhibit films in the IMAX format. The locations are as follows:

  • Madrid:

    • Cinesa Parquesur (Leganés)
    • Cinesa Heron City Las Rozas (Las Rozas)
    • Kinépolis Ciudad de la Imagen (Pozuelo de Alarcón)
  • Barcelona:

    • Cinesa Diagonal Mar
  • Mallorca:

    • Cinesa Festival Park
  • Valencia:

    • L’Hemisfèric in the City of Arts and Sciences

As for the film offerings, most IMAX theaters in Spain showcase major commercial releases such as Captain America: Brave New World or Mickey 17. However, L’Hemisfèric in Valencia specializes in educational documentaries covering topics of nature, science, and astronomy, as well as audiovisual shows like Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon. Therefore, those wishing to enjoy Hollywood productions in IMAX will need to choose from the other theaters.

If you are looking for the most outstanding experience, the IMAX theater at Kinépolis Ciudad de la Imagen in Madrid stands out with its enormous screen measuring 35 meters wide and 29.5 meters high, promising an unprecedented immersion. Another notable option is Cinesa Diagonal Mar in Barcelona, which features a 200 square meter screen and an advanced 12-channel sound system, making it one of the best in the country.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping to find screenings in the impressive IMAX 70 mm format, you should know that Spain does not have theaters that offer it. This exclusive format is only present in 30 cinemas worldwide, mainly located in the United States and Canada. Film lovers looking for this experience will have to travel abroad to enjoy it. However, if you want a 70 mm screening with an aspect ratio of 2.20:1, there are three options in Spain: Cines Palafox and Cines Aragonia in Zaragoza, as well as Phenomena in Barcelona.

In summary, watching a movie in IMAX format is well worth it. Those who have not yet had the opportunity to experience a screening in this format will be impressed by the difference it offers, from the clarity of the image to the quality of sound. If you find yourself in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, or Mallorca, you now know where to find these theaters and experience cinema at its finest.
