Leica introduces the SL3-S, its new $5,300 hybrid camera for photography and video.

That amounts to approximately $221 per megapixel.

The new Leica SL3-S is presented as a hybrid full-frame camera aimed at professionals working in both video and photography. Its launch price is $5,295, and it is designed to capture fast images and record in 6K. Unlike its predecessor, the SL3, which features a 60mp sensor focused on still photography, the SL3-S stands out with its 24mp sensor that allows for 6K video recording and capturing photographs at speeds of up to 30 frames per second, thanks to its continuous tracking autofocus.

Among the highlighted features of the SL3-S is its capability to record video in 6K (5952 x 3968 pixels) at 30fps, as well as at 60fps in 4K. Additionally, it allows for direct recording to an SSD via a USB-C connection. Although its sensor is not of ultra-high resolution for still images, its speed and autofocus capabilities compensate for this aspect. The camera features 779 phase detection autofocus points, more than double the 315 of the SL3, and presents improvements in object detection and focus tracking. This allows it to create high-resolution compositions of 48 and 96 megapixels without the need for a tripod.

Aesthetically, the SL3-S shares a compact design with the SL3 that includes features such as a 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen, a color-coded menu system, and dual card slots. Unlike the SL3, which does not include content credentials, the SL3-S integrates Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative for image verification. This feature is not available in the SL3 model launched in March 2024 due to hardware limitations.

The SL series is oriented towards professional photographers and videographers who need a versatile and efficient camera. Therefore, the SL3-S seems to offer better value for those seeking high-performance equipment without having to opt for more expensive options.
