It is reported that the launch of Samsung's XR headset has been delayed again, raising concerns about its arrival.

Should Samsung abandon its headphone project?

The development of Samsung and Google's XR headset has faced new delays, raising the question of whether we will finally see this device. It was recently reported that the launch might be postponed until 2025 or even 2026. These rumors about delays, while not significant in themselves, raise concerns, especially as competition in the extended reality device market intensifies.

For example, despite multiple delays, the Apple Vision Pro has finally reached the market, although it did not achieve the expected success. Its high price of $3,499 / £3,499 / A$5,999 could be a factor limiting its appeal, despite its remarkable technology and specifications. Many users may choose more affordable alternatives like the Meta Quest 3, which offer an equally valuable experience. Given this landscape, it is likely that a Samsung headset with a similar price point will not attract the same attention unless it presents significant improvements in performance and utility.

On the other hand, the arrival of the Meta Orion augmented reality glasses has impressed industry experts, highlighting their lighter and more comfortable design compared to bulkier virtual reality devices. The attention on these glasses puts pressure on Samsung, as if their headset is delayed until 2026, it could find itself in a complicated competitive position, since the Orion glasses are expected to hit the market between late 2027 and 2028.

Samsung and Google have promised to reveal more about their collaboration in XR before the end of 2024. As that remains, the hope that we will soon see tangible results persists, although increasing competition and technological advancements lead many to question whether it would be wiser for Samsung to focus on its alleged smart glasses.
