It is confirmed that Samsung's Vision Pro competitor will be released in 2025.
Samsung has announced that it will launch an XR device in 2025, after several years of hints about its collaboration with Qualcomm and Google.
Samsung has reaffirmed its intentions to launch an extended reality (XR) device that will be available in 2025. In its third-quarter earnings report for 2024, the company provided updates on its XR project, indicating that initial expectations predicting a launch in 2024 have been modified. Samsung is now targeting a goal of 2025 focused on "enhancing connectivity between products," including future XR devices.
While specific details about these devices were not provided in the report, there has been a significant increase in news related to the products in development. Since 2023, Samsung has been collaborating with Qualcomm and Google to create a mixed reality product capable of performing AR, VR, and XR functions. Although not many details have been given regarding this collaboration, it can be assumed that Samsung will handle branding and design, Qualcomm will supply the chip, and Google will provide the software.
Qualcomm's latest XR chip, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, has been available since January 2024. During Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in July, all parties reaffirmed their intention to launch the device. The confusion surrounding Samsung's XR device may stem from the lack of information about its features. However, a recent report indicated that the Google Play Store was updated to include support for the installation of XR headset apps just before Samsung issued its guidance for the third quarter of 2024, suggesting that Google is preparing thanks to its collaboration with Samsung.
Additionally, Samsung's XR project has been the subject of speculation, as Business Insider previously reported that the launch would not occur in 2024, but possibly in March 2025 for consumers. Industry-wise, this device is expected to compete with the Apple Vision Pro, which was launched in February at a price of $3,500. Rumors suggest that the Android-based XR platform could be priced between $1,000 and $1,500.
Samsung is not the only company working on XR headsets; Sony has been showcasing its own model since July, and Meta, in addition to having recently launched the Quest 3S, is collaborating with companies like Lenovo and Asus to develop future headsets within its Horizon OS ecosystem.
