Instagram adds a variety of new features to direct messages with its latest update.

Instagram is rolling out a significant update to its direct messages. Among the new features are a tool for sharing music, translation capabilities, and other enhancements.

Instagram is implementing an update to its messaging system that incorporates various new tools. These features could help the platform better compete with rivals in the direct messaging space, such as Apple iMessage and various third-party apps.

One of the most notable new features is the option to share music. With this update, users will be able to send songs in both individual messages and group chats. To use this feature, simply access the sticker tray and select the "Music" option, which will open a search bar to explore Instagram's audio library. However, it’s important to note that the songs must be available on the platform, and the clips have a maximum duration of 30 seconds.

Additionally, direct messages will have a translation tool that supports 99 languages. This feature is quite simple to use: users just need to press and hold a message and select “Translate.” The translation will appear just below the original message, facilitating communication.

A new way to pin messages, images, or even Reels at the top of chats has also been implemented. To do so, simply press and hold the message and select “Pin.” Instagram allows users to pin up to three messages per conversation, which can be useful for keeping frequently requested information handy, though it will likely be used primarily for memes.

Another new feature is the ability to schedule messages by pressing and holding the send button, allowing users to plan messages up to 29 days in advance. Finally, the platform has introduced an option to invite people to a group chat via a QR code. All of these tools will start rolling out today for iOS and Android users worldwide, while a web update is in development but not yet available.

Instagram has been quite active in adding new features to its software. Recently, it began testing a "dislike" button for comments and announced that it is working on a video editing app similar to CapCut. In addition, the platform has expanded the duration of Reels to three minutes in an effort to compete with TikTok, and has recently removed third-party fact-checkers.
