"Ikea registered a Matter-over-Thread temperature sensor with the FCC."
Ikea delves even deeper into Matter.
Ikea has registered a Thread device for the first time, a temperature and humidity sensor called "Timmerflotte," which is Matter compatible, with the FCC. According to reports, a diagram from the filing, discovered by CybermodStudios, shows that it is a circular device powered by two AAA batteries and features a QR code and an 11-digit number for its configuration with Matter.
It is noteworthy that the Timmerflotte seems to use no other wireless protocol besides Thread. This is relevant because Ikea, which typically employs Zigbee or Wi-Fi protocols in its devices, does not have a hub that allows for native integration with this new product. In particular, Ikea's Dirigera hub lacks capabilities such as Thread edge router. Although it can now function as a bridge for Matter, it is not a Matter controller, which prevents the management of Matter-compatible products through it.
It is worth noting that initially, Ikea announced that the Dirigera would support Thread. However, it was not launched with this functionality. The emergence of the Timmerflotte could indicate that Ikea is preparing to activate the Thread radios of the Dirigera and its capacity as a Matter controller. This would allow it to operate as an independent smart home hub, similar to the Aqara M3 or Flic LR and Mini hubs.
