I tested this mini PC for NAS storage and playback, and here’s why I believe it’s ideal for a home lab.
Dual-boot system, NAS potential, and a wide range of use options: this is a true ready-to-use solution for a home lab.
The GMKtec G9 presents an interesting proposal in the mini PC market by incorporating multiple features that make it stand out. It offers the option of dual boot with Windows 11 or Ubuntu operating systems, in addition to having four M.2 slots and various network options that enhance its functionality from the outset. Although neither operating system is specifically designed for NAS, it allows for formatting the device in different ways according to user needs, which is uncommon in other mini PCs.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Among the positives are the dual boot, the storage capacity of up to 16 TB with M.2 SSDs, and its potential as a NAS. However, the operating system options are not optimal for a NAS, and the performance as a PC is slower than expected.
The G9 uses an Intel Twin Lake N150 processor and Intel Super Core graphics, providing enough power for office tasks, although its performance is not well-suited for intensive applications. Aesthetically, the design is minimalist and offers a good amount of ventilation, which is helpful due to its compact size.
In terms of connectivity, the G9 has multiple ports, including USB-A and USB-C, and the ability to connect up to three monitors, thus favoring its use in development environments.
Storage and Flexibility
The device allows storage of up to 16TB through its four M.2 slots and comes with 64 GB of eMMC storage for Ubuntu installation. Despite the limitations in RAM capacity, which is soldered to the motherboard, the G9 is versatile and can function as a test station or media server.
While not designed for complex graphics tasks or gaming, its performance is adequate for office and development applications. With the use of Ubuntu, the device offers optimized performance that can be beneficial for lighter testing and development.
Conclusion
The GMKtec NucBox G9 stands out for its adaptability and functionality in a compact and affordable format. Its ability to function as a NAS or a home lab makes it an excellent choice for those looking to experiment with new technologies or those requiring a device with various usage options. Although it may not be the most powerful on the market, its versatility and competitive price make it shine in its category.
