How 'cozy gaming' is popularizing mindfulness

Games with a meditative focus, such as 'Stardew Valley' and 'Animal Crossing,' are helping a generation of players develop positive habits.

In a small, pixelated town called Pelican Town, players take on the role of a human who has inherited their grandfather's farm. In this setting, life revolves around working the land, improving the village, and building meaningful connections with the other inhabitants. This rural simplicity is the essence of Stardew Valley, a farming simulation game released in 2016 that transformed turnip collecting into a rewarding community activity. Nearly a decade later, the game has surpassed 41 million copies sold, establishing itself as the leading reference in an expanding genre known as "cozy games."

Mary Kish, the community manager on Twitch, was one of the first to review Stardew Valley after its release. In her analysis, Kish highlighted how the game's meditative activities often provoke personal reflections in real life, describing it as an experience that stimulates both curiosity and the heart. According to Kish, the game has impacted an entire generation that is beginning to reject more aggressive games. "Playing Stardew Valley made me feel like time stood still," she says, adding that she experienced pleasant dreams related to the game.

The popularity of cozy games has significantly increased, especially during the pandemic, becoming a refuge for many in the face of anxiety and depression. These games are often low-stimulation and focus on "cute" or "soft" aesthetics, prioritizing enjoyment over competition.

Professor Kurt Squire, a computing expert, states that playing genuinely is beneficial and restorative. Research supports the idea that games can induce states of mindful attention, leading more creators to design games specifically for meditation. For example, studies have shown that certain games can help young people concentrate and minimize distractions, fostering positive emotional responses and mindfulness practices.

Additionally, the mechanics of a game are vital to its ability to relax players. A game may have beautiful art and music, but if the gameplay is frustrating, it won't have the calming effect that's sought. Clinical studies have also shown that certain games can reduce cortisol levels, the stress hormone.

Cozy games have evolved in their digital habits, as emerging communities on platforms like TikTok not only enjoy these games but also create supportive environments. Streamers who broadcast cozy aesthetic games add elements like ASMR to create an even more comforting experience. Many, like Kennedy, have found in these games a way to manage stress and mental health, highlighting the importance of recognizing one's own emotions.

Although major game developers have begun to market cozy games, the community still largely remains conflict-free. This phenomenon is notable in an industry that is often critical and abrasive. Interactions within these communities can provide a safe space for players from diverse backgrounds.

The search for shared experiences among players has also intensified on Twitch, turning viewing streams into a form of social connection. Research suggests that watching other players can have effects similar to playing, providing an opportunity to learn and process mistakes.

In this digital environment where young people seek socialization, games that promote social and emotional learning become essential. Establishing a routine of self-reflection, even for brief moments each day, can be key to maintaining good mental health. The cozy gaming community, ultimately, reflects a trend towards emotional well-being and connection between people.
